Saguaro Stories

Saguaro Stories has been a literary landmark on Congress Street since 1998, standing at the cultural crossroads where the American Southwest meets Mexico. The store draws deeply from Tucson's identity as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy and a borderlands community, with shelves that reflect the intermingling of Mexican, Native American, and Anglo literary traditions. The University of Arizona's renowned creative writing program sends a steady stream of students and visiting writers through the door, and the university press section is one of the most complete anywhere. A desert garden courtyard planted with saguaro, prickly pear, and desert marigold provides a shaded retreat where customers read with hummingbirds darting overhead. The rare books room holds an impressive collection of Edward Abbey first editions and early Tohono O'odham oral history transcriptions.
