Understanding Reading Level Systems

Lexile Measure

A scientific approach to measuring reading ability and text complexity. Scores range from below 200L for beginning readers to above 1600L for advanced readers.

BR (Beginning Reader)Emergent readers, pre-K to early K

200L-400LGrades K-2, early readers

400L-600LGrades 2-4, developing readers

600L-800LGrades 4-6, proficient readers

AR (Accelerated Reader) Level

Indicates grade level difficulty. A book with AR level 4.5 is appropriate for a student in the fifth month of fourth grade.

1.0-2.0First to second grade

2.0-3.0Second to third grade

3.0-4.0Third to fourth grade

4.0-5.0Fourth to fifth grade

Guided Reading Level

A leveling system using letters A-Z to indicate text difficulty, commonly used in elementary schools.
